Don't be put off by trite tails of kidnappings or the anti-Islamic, shoot-em up fare pumped out by Hollywood: Yemen is a golden destination for more reasons than its sunsets.

Significant archaeological sites dot its ancient landscapes, bargain hunters can get lost, literally, among the warren of alleyways that make up its vibrant souks and bazaars, and adventure travellers will enjoy camping and trekking amid unexpected geography. Not least in the unique Socotra archipelago, a stretch of islands that count over 270 endemic species of wildlife and plant life. Never thought of Yemen as an island-bearing nation eh?

Then there's the more stereotypical but nonetheless charming desert oases and mountaintop medieval villages and more tea than you can shake a cardamom tree at. And to pep you up for those long friendly chats with your 'kidnappers', tuck into some qat, a mild leaf stimulant, which is entwined deeply in the mostly welcoming Yemeni culture.
