botswana

This landlocked country, has survived in relative peace compared its African neighbours. It has also triumphed – rising from one of Africa’s poorest nations in the forty or so years since independence from the Brits.

Tourism, particularly to the spectacular Okavango Delta (the world’s largest inland delta) is something of a lifeline. This maybe on the increase given the runaway success of Alexandra McCall’s novels and BBC series, The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, set in Botswana.

As well as delta and Kalahari desert areas, you’ll want to check out the grasslands and savannas, where Blue Wildebeest, loads of antelopes, and birds can be spyed. Northern Botswana boasts a rare large population of the endangered African Wild Dog. Chobe National Park, has the world's largest concentration of African elephants.

Fascinating hunter-gather ‘bushmen’ traditions still linger alongside the more modernized parts of the country such as Gaborone. All-in-all Botswana a great place to taste a slice of Africa – you may even want to go back for seconds.
