As a contrast of the modern and the (very) old sits alongside a disconcerting disparity between rich and poor, Romania’s identity sits somewhere (literally and figuratively) between Europe, its Balkans surrounds and its Communist past. All of which makes it an interesting place to travel. You can flit between baroque cities and German villages, medieval fortresses and sites, European-style cities, monasteries and spa resorts.
The Danube Delta as well as the Carpathian Mountains are great for outdoorsy types, including great trekking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Channel your inner boho as you hang in the bohemian communities on the coast of the Black Sea, close to the border with Bulgaria. While Romania’s communist past is still evidenced, since joining the EU in 2007 its living standards are higher than in recent history and we thinks this is one country on the up and up.
Besides, any country with a 2,000-year plus winemaking tradition must be worth a look.
