Bowled Over By Cricket
"We're one player short" says Mick, the captain of ACME London’s arts-based cricket team, which plays the likes of the National Theatre and Groucho Club. Sitting in the middle of a picnic spread enjoying one of the rare sun blessed days of a UK summer, I can feel ten pairs of eyes cast their mislaid hopes in my direction. To my surprise, then horror, I’m dragged to the wicket like a tail-ender on a run of ducks. After the quickest of tactical briefings I grip a bat for the first time. I realise as I hit one in every three balls that perhaps, in my cream tea daze, I had vastly underestimated this serenely complex sport.
