CAPE YORK TURTLE RESCUE

Want to fulfill your Steve Irwin fantasies and feel all warm and fuzzy at the same time? Then join the Mapoon Aboriginal community as it rescues endangered turtles and other marine life from stray and abandoned fishing nets on Cape York Peninsula.

Every year, hundreds of ghost nets wash up on Cape York's western coast, snaring unsuspecting turtles as they come ashore to breed. From June to October travellers are invited to help protect these endangered creatures by clearing nets and gathering crucial data on their populations.
